Remembering Senator Robert F.Kennedy
Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, who was campaigning for the Democratic nomination for the presidency, was shot shortly after midnight June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, Calfif., having won the critical California primary the day before.
Sirhan Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian, opened fire with a .22 caliber revolver and shot Kennedy in the head at close range after the senator went to the hotel's kitchen to greet supporters working there. Moments before, Kennedy had victoriously addressed supporters in the hotel's ballroom.
Kennedy died the next day at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Thousands attended his funeral June 7, 1968, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
