Burn Calories

You probably already know that in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. This article will take a closer look at some easy ways to burn calories that you can incorporate into your daily life.

Fidget. Studies show that lean people fidget for about 150 minutes a day more than obese people do. That kind of low-grade activity (tapping feet and fingers, twirling hair, gesturing while speaking, etc.) can burn 350 calories a day, which translates into 10-30 pounds a year![1] It's called Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), which is basically any movement that isn't intended as exercise. You can burn an extra 100-150 calories an hour by increasing NEAT.

Here are some ideas:

Standing burns 50% more calories than sitting.[2] Stand while talking on the phone, using the computer, or reading the paper. Pacing is even better. By pacing, you can burn 90 more calories an hour than if you were sitting still. Make it a habit to pace whenever you use the phone. Buy a work station or desk that you can stand at or, if you can, set up a desk over a treadmill. By walking 1 mile an hour while you work, you'll burn an additional 100 calories per hour which, if you do this for 2-3 hours a day, you could lose 44-60 pounds in a year. It's recommended that you start slowly, though, walking 15 minutes every hour and then increasing gradually. Alternatively, you can use a mini-stepper under a tall desk, or while watching TV to achieve the same results.

Reach for the caffeine, pass on the sugar and cream. Caffeine tends to increase the number of calories you burn, probably because they stimulate thermogenesis — one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food and because the boost in energy means you move around more (which means more calories burned). Having 250 milligrams of caffeine with a meal can increase the calories spent metabolizing the meal by 10%. Green tea, in particular, seems to be especially conducive to burning calories. So instead of having soda or any other calorie-laden drink with your meals, go for an unsweetened cup of coffee or tea. Skip the sugar, milk, cream, or any other caloric enhancements so that you don't replace the extra calories you're burning. Drinking coffee or tea plain will take some getting used to, but purchasing high-quality beans or tea leaves will certainly help.

Increase your after-meal burn by eating more vegetables and phasing out meat and dairy products. Your body expends around 200 calories to digest your food. People who eat fibrous fruit, vegetables, complex carbs, and low-fat meat burn even more calories after they eat. In fact, vegetarians generally have a bigger after-meal burn than their omnivorous counterparts. And no matter what you eat, adding 5g of Tabasco sauce to any meal can raise your metabolism by 12-20 percent for up to two hours after you're done. This is caused by capsaicin - the nutrient that makes chile peppers hot. Drink lemon juice in lukewarm water. This formulation gets more effective when done on an empty stomach.

Drink ice water. The colder the water you drink, the more calories you burn, since your body expends more energy warming up the water. If you have 8 glasses (64 oz) of ice-cold water in a day, you'll burn 70 more calories than if you drank 8 glasses of a body temperature beverage. In fact, this principle will work with any calorie-free beverage, as long as it's ice cold,[8] so you might want to ice up that coffee and tea mentioned earlier for cumulative calorie-burning effects. Keep in mind, however, that the weight loss impact of this one particular practice isn't drastic: It would take 435 glasses of ice water (about two months, assuming 8 glasses a day) to lose one pound. And, don't go overboard. There's such a thing as water toxicity. Follow the guidelines in How to Drink More Water Every Day.

Chill out. Shivering burns calories, so if you can spend more time outside when it's cold, you'll crank up the calorie furnace. Even if you don't shiver, though, you can get a 3-7% increase in calorie burn just from your body warming itself (similar to the principle at work when you drink ice water). Just don't run away with this idea and get yourself sick! The first steps towards weigh loss must include both Diet and Exercise. The simple tips listed above will not lead you to lose weight substantially, if your diet does not reflect the change.

As with any weight-loss behavior or diet you adopt, speak first with your doctor. Get professional advice when deciding to change your fitness regimen or diet. These tips are meant as just that--tips, they are not meant to provide a comprehensive weight-loss plan.
While some little things certainly help burn extra calories, do not think they are an easy way out. For instance, caffeine might help you metabolize a little more after a big meal, but it might also very quickly be detrimental to your health, especially if you start thinking along the lines of "oh well, if 250 mg will burn an extra 10%, let's go for 500 mg and have an extra bag of crisps". You may end up experiencing tachycardia, trembling hands and insomnia long before you start going down a size. And no amount of getting yourself frozen can ever replace a healthy diet. Those tips are just ways of boosting your dieting efforts, so DO NOT take them to the extreme in order to have a good excuse for not dieting properly. This would only ruin your health. Which leads to the second point...

Blossom Ice Cubes

Dress up your drinks with beautiful ice cubes featuring blossoms from the garden. Red rose petals will enhance any drink, and can also be sprinkled on the table for a romantic effect. Perfect for summer afternoon parties or cocktail events.

1. Gather and gently rinse all of your pesticide-free blossoms. Other blossoms of your choice can be used instead of the roses, as listed below.
2. Boil water for 2 minutes for all the air trapped in the water to escape. Then leave to cool till room temperature. This will ensure that the ice cubes are crystal clear.
3. Place each blossom at the base of each individual compartment within an ice tray (or more trays if you have a large party).
4. Fill each compartment half full with the cooled boiled water and freeze.
5. After the water is frozen solid, fill each ice cube compartment the rest of the way to the top with the remaining boiled water.
6. Refreeze and allow it to remain in the freezer until you are ready to use them.

Blossoms, flowers and leaves that are suitable include: nasturtiums, violets, rose petals, pansies, lavender, basil, chive/leek/onion/garlic blossoms, borage flowers, most flowers from edible herbs (e.g. basil, oregano, thyme). You can also freeze a whole punch bowl shape with a variety of blossoms. Don't use the glass punchbowl or it will expand and burst in the freezer. Instead, pull out a ring-shaped cake tin and fill it with flowers and water. Follow the same procedure as above (filling halfway, then freezing), but you can add additional blossoms to the second layer so that the blossoms are throughout the large ice cube. Always have some ice cubes without blossoms in them for guests who might be squeamish for one reason or another. If fresh flowers are unavailable, a silk flower ring (one used for pillar candles) also makes a beautiful addition to a wedding or shower punch. Just make sure that you carefully wash the flower ring and place it in a ring-shaped cake pan as above. It can be used over and over.If you are using ice cubes in wine, make them with the wine you will be drinking. This will prevent dilution of the wine as the ice cube melts. Freeze with a strawberry, a raspberry or a mandarin slice for a delightful, uplifting taste. Getting ice trays in certain shapes will also help.

Be careful - only choose those plant pieces you know are edible. Also, a lot of plants are poisonous. Learn what plants are safe and unsafe to use. Check in library books, online, with specialists at nurseries or botany departments at universities. Do not use it if in any doubt at all. An example of a common but extremely poisonous plant would be the Oleander, common in many urban areas. If you believe you have ingested a poisonous plant call a poison control center immediately.

Manage Your Finances

Personal Finance Management is a subject that is not taught in many schools but it is something that we will face in our lives later. A bad management of finance will provide nothing but financial trouble.

Here are some ways you can manage your money.
Start saving today. Make it a habit to save a portion of your paycheck on a monthly basis. Some banks have the facility of taking a portion of your money into a savings account automatically. When you can borrow/rent, don't buy. Some books can be borrowed at the library without buying and some videos can be rented. You don't have to buy them and let them take up space in your house. Go for high down payment and low monthly installments. It will help you in the long-run and you can sleep better at night. Have good insurance coverage. You will never know when you will need a large sum of money during an emergency. So having good insurance coverage can really help tide you over through a crisis. Owning a credit card is very important for establishing credit. Even if you don't ever use it, it's important to have one. If you don't trust yourself, just lock it in a drawer. Have a good book on personal finance management. Learn proper finance management from the experts.Save a dollar a day as it will snowball to a million some day.

A debit card is a poor substitute for a credit card. It gives others direct access to your bank account without having the credit card issuer as an intermediary. Plus, temporary holds done by merchants are keeping you from accessing your money, even if you don't end up buying anything (For example, some gas stations will put a $100 hold on your account as soon as you put your card in, regardless of how much gas you buy. No problem with a credit card, but this can be bad for your checking account). Upgrade your qualifications. Take time to upgrade your knowledge and skills so that you will stay ahead of competition. It will enhance the chances of you making more money in future.

When you receive calls from banks that invite you to sign up for a credit card, reject them. No matter how exciting are their offers, do not sign up with them. Nothing will bother you more than having the banks to chase you for the credit card payments.

Look Beautiful During Summer Vacation

It's finally summer! School's out, you're able to sleep-in and hang out with your friends all you want. Summer most likely means you will be outside a lot, and be in the view of others. You want to look great, right? Follow these directions below to achieve an absolutely stunning yet completely natural look this summer.

Fix your face. Drink plenty of water to clear up your skin and aid your kidneys in excreting toxins from your body. If your acne is severe, see a dermatologist. If your acne is mild and sporadic, use a concealer when you get spots. Since you have acne, your skin type is considered sensitive because harsh treatments will irritate it. You are likely breakout prone, so always buy products targeted toward this skin type. Always remove make-up at the end of the day, and wash your face twice (morning and night). Use a good moisturizer so your skin is hydrated. Try and use a moisturizer with sunscreen during the daytime. If you tend to have oily skin, carry oil-absorbing pads with you to blot your skin with every few hours. Care for your body. Always use sunscreen. You will still tan but you will cause a lot less damage to your skin. Use self-tanning lotion or cream. Remain physically active. Go to the gym 3 - 4 times a week. If a gym is not accessible, go swimming, biking, rollerblading, walking, etc. Work with your hair. Do whatever works for you and suits your face. If your hair is curly, use a product to define your curls. If you're looking for a new style, go to a hairdresser and ask for his or her opinion. A professional will be able to help you pick a style and color that will suit your face and skin tone. Apply make-up. This is not necessary but if your parents allow it, it could be useful. Use a mascara that is waterproof, which is best for summer and it's likely that you'll be sweating, swimming, etc. Curl your eyelashes before you use mascara, it will make your eyes pop. Apply bronze to your cheeks, forehead, nose and chin; this will give you a nice summer glow. If you have pimples, dot on concealer and seal it with powder.

Wear your favorite clothing. Wear whatever you feel like. You will always look better when you're wearing something you're comfortable in. Don't forget the hands & feet. Since your feet will be exposed a lot through wearing sandals, make sure they're pleasing to look at. You can have a pedicure done, or give yourself one. Just make sure your feet are clean, hair-free, nails aren't too long, nails are filed, and your feet are moisturized. Be sure to use sunscreen on your feet, too. As for your hands, try putting a clear polish on your nails and keeping them well groomed. If your hands tend to be dry, apply a moisturizer at night and wear white cotton gloves while you sleep (this also works well in the winter). You will wake up with softer, more beautiful hands.

Always use sunscreen no matter what. Re-apply it every 2 - 3 hours.
Chlorine dries all hair out, but for blonde's it can sometimes cause hair to take on a greenish hue. Make sure you wash your hair after getting out of the pool.
Avoid sunscreens containing parabens, which are possible cancer-causing preservatives.

Learn About Other Cultures

There are a lot of ways to experience other cultures without having to take a long plane flight. You can travel via the Internet, without ever leaving your house, and learn about other countries, without having to go broke.

Visit the library and check out travel books. Reading through travel books and travel journals gives you great ideas about local and international destinations and begins to expose you to new cultures. Volunteer to practice English with people in your community who speak English as a second language. In exchange for practicing English, you can ask to learn more about their culture and language. Take a class at your community college about another culture. It doesn't have to be a language class...it can be a dance class, like capoeira from Brazil, or a cooking class like learning how to make mole from Mexico. Visit local museums and cultural centers, especially when they are exhibiting works from other countries.

Explore the Internet...subscribe to newspapers from other countries online to read more about what they are reading. Browse local websites with data on entertainment, outings, trends. Take a look at local communities, forums, blogs to get into real everyday slang and culture. You can even get a pen/email pal.Realize that if you would still like to travel, investigate exchange programs in your community. Many cities have "sister city" exchange programs where they select young people to visit the town's sister city for a week. Other options include Rotary, church programs and volunteer organizations. Many of these groups offer supervised travel and travel grants. Remember it is always good if you have a friend of another culture. This way you learn more about how people look, act, etc.

Ask your teachers about special travel programs. Many teachers take trips during the summer and learn a lot about exchange programs abroad. Depending on how old you are, you may also be able to work abroad. Club Med, cruise ships and other tourist organizations often hire young, but over 18, people to run events, take guests ashore, etc.

Make sure your parents know why you want to travel and learn more about other cultures. They might be able to help you, and, by keeping them informed, you are more likely to be able to make a trip

Be an Open Person

Are you an enclosed person? Is that keeping you from having more friends then you intended at school? Well this guide will show you how to become more open at school, work, or anywhere.

Be different. People want someone who isn't the same as everyone else. It gets annoying when you say the same thing as the girl right next to you. Be original or learn to become more creative. Don't be to different like a loner. People will sort of... avoid you. Become optimistic. Sometimes the day isn't perfect and there seems like there is no possible way to stay positive, think of the things we always forget. Think: "there is always tomorrow" or "it's not the end of the world" Of course there are going to be some downs in your life but you can't just give up that easily. Also your social status will definitely go down if you are always sad.

Become more outgoing. Do something! go explore the world outside your house! Life isn't eat sleep work and repeat. Try going to the park or shop with a friend. Maybe even sacrifice part of summer for a road trip(if you can drive). The point is to let people know what you are interested in. You could like hip hop music, nature, reading, or running. Anything that suites you. Don't be afraid to express yourself. That's the key to being open. You have to be able to tell people what you think and what interests you. You and everybody should be able to identify the real you. You can;t hide what you feel for ever. Overcome your fears. The main fear is that of rejection. No not necessarily friendship but a more closer relationship. That can also make you feel more enclosed. A relationship is not the end of the world. In fact that's not going to be your last love.

Throw a Fourth of July Party

If you want to throw a Fourth of July party that people remember for years, just use great fireworks and a bit of your imagination.

Give the invitations at least three weeks ahead. Clean inside and outside of you house; people don't want to come to a dirty house! Chances are that they won't want to stay outside the whole day, so keep some extra chairs in the living room and kitchen. Buy all of the food three days before the party. Some good food to have are; hot dogs, hamburgers, tofu dogs, Garden burgers, chips, pop, red white and blue M&M's, strawberries, Doritos, Ruffles and dip, Frito's and bean dip, Ore's, cookies, brownies, cheesecake, watermelon, and popcorn. Use fireworks! Make sure there are a lot of chairs outside so everybody can sit. Also, have a bucket of water nearby so kids can put their sparklers in or just in case of a firework gone bad. Get some insect repelling candles/lanterns and bug spray. Have a pool or a slip-and-slide. That will keep you cool in the daytime and keep the kiddos busy.

Ask people if they could bring something. Somebody could get chips, somebody else could get the cups and napkins, and somebody else could get plates and pop.
Make sure you have ice! Have sunscreen and insect repellent on a table. Also, have band-aids and burn medicine in case of a minor burn. Make sure that you are allowed to pop fireworks where you live. Some nosy neighbors could call the cops. Keep it All-American. Don't lose track of the historical significance of this day. Remember that our forefathers gave their lives so that we could be free.
Some fireworks could go bad causing a fire or a burn. Make sure it is legal to use fireworks in your area. Neighbors might not like all the noise.
