SpitzTunes -- Right Direction!

Many have asked "Who is Spitz?" Just a Panama City Beach guy, making my way through life. I look back at my time on the radio, in a truck, on the b-ball court, lovin', drinkn', .... and I ask if I've been going in the right direction ... I think so, but I'm not there yet ... looking forward to the rest of it!

Become a Fashion Designer

Fashion designing - sounds like a dream job, huh? It can also be one of the hardest professions to get into. But you can do it with a little hard work. There are many types of Fashion Designers. Some work for themselves, others work at medium sized companies, and others work for international businesses. Find the right type of business for you, but first you have to become a designer. This will take time, but be patient. It is worth the long run!

Make a list of companies or brands that sell fashion. Find out what country they are from. Also write what type of fashion each company makes. These are called "fashion categories". Some examples of categories are: swimwear, lingerie, sportswear, junior sportswear, career wear and such. Decide what category interests you the most. Now start a scrapbook with pictures of that type of fashion. If you want to add sketches, that will add to the notebook. Also make a list of companies or brands in that category.
Take an art class in drawing. Learn to draw drapery. If you can find a class that draws people or "life drawing", take that too. If you can't draw real people, start drawing from photos of fashion models. Also learn about color, and mixing color. Know what colors look good together and how color groups are assembled.
Get a mannequin that you can pin fabric on or drape* to make designs to see how they would fit a body so that way you won't sew something and then try it on and it turns out it looks terrible.
Draping is another word for covering, dressing, or hanging cloth in loose folds
Learn to sew clothes. Study the patterns and become familiar with sewing pattern shapes. Sew for real people so that you get familiar with body shapes and fit. Also learn about fabric. Know what fabrics are made from (silk? wool? cotton?) and how they are woven (velvet, twill, satin).

Make clothes for other people. Yes, that may be more like dressmaking than design, particularly if your subject is conservative. But you will learn a great deal about dealing with a customer and fitting the human body in all its variations. You can charge money for your work.
Learn about fashion trends. Visit such web sites as pantone . com to see what colors are going to be in fashion. Try to predict what fashion will be popular in the future.
Learn how fashion is sold: stores, online and such. What are the major department stores? What stores sell the category of fashion you are interested in? Also learn about the "target customer". This is the type of person who will buy the fashion. What is the average age, income, lifestyle and other traits of the shopper? What do they want to buy?
Consider getting professional training. If you live close to a community college or university, see if that school has a program in fashion (this subject may be in a Family & Consumer Science Dept.), costume (Drama Dept.) or fashion merchandising. Plan to spend at least 2 years in any fashion design program. Don't feel that you have to spend a lot of money to get this training. Many states have public colleges or trade schools with excellent fashion training.
Seek an internship. Ask your teacher or instructor about this. Some companies want interns to be enrolled in a specific course, and others don't care.
Portfolio and Resume: When you graduate, you should have a portfolio of your best work. Usually these illustrations are of the one category that you are interesting in finding a job in. A good portfolio will sometimes have sample garments too. You may want to add production flats with each drawing to show the details, also fabric swatches for each design. 14" x 17" is a good size for a portfolio.
First Job: think of your first job as 'graduate school'. You won't be a designer, but you might work for one. It will be hard work, long hours, and lots of exciting times. As you work, you will move up the career ladder, working at many positions before you become a designer. A professional designer has huge responsibilities, and only a seasoned pro qualifies to take on those tasks.
  11. Start at home by sketching down some of your clothing ideas on a piece of paper and keep them in a special folder, keep editing it till its just right and explore with colors. USE YOUR IMAGINATION !

Develop a working knowledge of design-related software programs such as Adobe Photo shop and Illustrator.
Subscribe to fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle to keep yourself up-to-date with fashion trends. Also consider subscription to trade newspapers such as "Woman's Wear Daily", or regional papers such as "Apparel News". This is what the pros read, and you should too.
Learn about historical fashion. Know fashion styles from Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, through the Renaissance, Elizabethan, Victorian and 19th centuries. Know the important 20th century designers: Chanel, Dior, Poiret and the others.
Learn about ethnic or regional costumes: China, India, Africa, Mexico and others. Know the styles that people wear around the world, and how current fashion borrows from those styles.
Go to shops which sell materials and have a good feel to them so you know which fabric will be suitable for which type of clothes.
Becoming familiar with the computer and research is something that all fashion designers need to succeed. Try asking some people that you know who know their way around computers to give you some great tips.Cut bits of fabric that you like and buttons and lace etc. and make a collage and maybe frame it.
Take classes in sketching and fashion illustration. Your ideas will usually be presented in sketch form. Computer aided drafting (CAD) is another useful skill.
Professional designers get ideas on their own time. Work hours are spent dealing with vendors, fitting models, publicity, production schedules and problems.
Be aware of how far in the future the fashion industry works to produce new styles. When fall merchandise is being shown in the fashion mags, spring or even the season after it is the focus of the designer. The color forecasts are a year ahead.
     Watch "Project Runway".

How to Be Feminine

People are so sensitive about gender issues these days that it's almost impossible to talk about what's feminine or masculine without stepping on someone's toes. If you're reading this, though, you're probably looking to get in touch with your more feminine side - those non-physical aspects of yourself that make you feel more like a girl or a woman. There's nothing wrong with being feminine, or masculine, or androgynous--we all have our preferences, and if femininity is yours, here's some advice on how to cultivate that.

Sit down and think back to times when you've felt especially feminine. Remember those moments in detail - How did you feel? What were you wearing? What were you doing? This is the first and most important step because it reveals what you consider to be feminine, and that's ultimately what matters most. Focus on those details, and work on recreating those conditions and that feeling in yourself.
Know the difference between being feminine and being girly. Being girly implies being feminine but in a youthful and materialistic sort of way. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not the only way to be feminine. You can be 70 years old and wear a silk bathrobe and still be feminine because ultimately, you can still do the things that make you feel more like a woman.

Love every inch of your body. The body is what makes you female, so how can you be feminine if you don't embrace your female form? A woman's body naturally has a higher body fat percentage than that of a man, so don't dismiss your curves. On the other hand, part of loving your body is taking care of it, so don't dismiss your cholesterol levels, either. Fortunately, you don't have to look like a catwalk model in order to be reasonably healthy.
Be graceful. In most societies, women are thought to be more naturally graceful than men. There are always exceptions, of course, and it is totally up to you whether you choose gracefulness to be an expression of your femininity. Generally, however, many women feel more feminine when they make smooth movements, rather than jerky, powerful ones. And, of course, consider the context. You might want to be fierce on the volleyball court or shooting range, and svelte at a bar or in the bedroom. There's no rule saying you have to be graceful (or feminine) all the time.
Dance. Dancing is an extension of your body, and through dance you can find ways to emphasize your femininity. Belly dancing, for example, accentuates the natural curves of a woman's form. A partner dance, like salsa or the waltz, can also help you feel more feminine because such dances are built upon the traditional differences between men and women--the man guides, while the woman follows and makes more fluid, extravagant movements.
Be playful. Let's ditch the whole idea that being feminine means being perfect and ethereal. For those times when grace is lacking and you fall flat on your face in the middle of a room, the true test of your femininity is your ability to laugh it off! Because think about it: Taking life too seriously isn't very feminine in most people's books, and it's not very healthy overall. So smile a lot, flirt, tease, and play. Have fun! Ultimately, being feminine is about feeling at ease with yourself, and you can't feel at ease if you're too stiff and somber, so be the opposite: lighthearted and playful.

These steps can also be followed by a man who wishes to get in touch with his feminine side.

What is considered to be "feminine" and "masculine" varies from culture to culture. Some cultures even have a "third" gender.

Keep up With Your Internet Savvy Kids

Kids sometimes want to hide the fact that they are doing things online of which their parents don't approve. Here's how to stay on top of what your kids are up to online. Kids don't say savvy anymore. That's so old.

Learn to use the computer. If you don't understand at least the basics of using your computer and internet programs, your kids will be able to take advantage of your lack of knowledge. Look for community courses, online tutorials, or read help manuals for the programs your kids use. Don't count on your kids to show you everything; they may leave out information that would allow you to control their internet experience. Of course, if you found this, you obviously know at least a little bit already.
Research your programs' parental controls. Many programs that allow you to access the internet also let you exercise some control over what your kids can and can't do. Certain programs will let you block questionable sites, keep kids from talking to strangers, or conceal passwords so they don't give them out to anyone. Many even allow you to customize settings to be age appropriate for each child in your family. Find out what parental controls are offered with your current software and what additional programs you can purchase. Choose a password for yourself that your kids are unlikely to guess and don't tell them what it is. Check the parental control settings from time to time to make sure they haven't been changed.
Limit your kids' computer time. If your kids are constantly online, they're more likely to sneak onto sites you don't want them visiting. Set a limit for their daily computer time and stick to it. If they tell you they need to use the computer for homework, ask them what the assignment is and check in on them to make sure they're staying on task. Watch the time here too. A child who spends hours doing research for a one page paper on worms is probably up to something.
Learn the tricks. The original intent of this article was to alert parents on this site how to tell kids to keep parents from being fully aware of the sites their children are visiting. The bad news is that these articles are unlikely to go away. The good news is that they're just as available to you as they are to your kids. Check wikiHow and other sites for such tips and tricks and you'll know how your kids may try to conceal a visit to a website you don't approve of. (A list of some of these how-tos is provided below.)
Talk to your kids. As your children get older, you will have less and less control over their internet access. Schools, libraries, and many other places offer computers for the public to use. Your best bet, for older kids especially, is to sit down and discuss your concerns about the internet and explain why you don't want them going on certain sites. Do your own research; don't just repeat what you heard from a fear inspiring news story. Kids probably know a lot about the sites you'll be discussing, either from friends or from personal experience, so make sure you have your facts accurate. Be prepared to listen and discuss, and have realistic expectations. Older kids will more than likely talk to people online who they do not know in real life. As long as you discuss ground rules about acceptable conversation and information that should not be shared, this should not be a problem. Talking to kids about your expectations helps them to understand your concerns and gives them an opportunity to use the internet responsibly on their own. Keeping the lines of communication about internet use open will also help you to keep tabs on what your kids are up to without constantly having to micromanage them.

If you use parental control features or programs to block certain web content, you may be inadvertently blocking sites that could be useful to your child. Blocking all images of nudity may seem like a good idea, but what happens when your child needs to do a report on Michelangelo's "David"? Look for parental controls that offer customizing options to suit you family's needs.
Here is a passive way to monitor your children's Internet usage: put their computer in a common area, such as the family room, with the screen facing out into the room. They will be much more careful about where they go online if someone could walk in and see the screen at any time. If your children have laptops, turn off wireless and make them plug into the router to connect. (Make sure your neighbors don't have open wireless networks your children can connect to or this won't work.)

How to Discipline a Child

No matter where a child misbehaves, it is acceptable to talk to them, and ask them to behave. At times, the problem might only be one where a child wants to get something, that you do not want them to get. Explain why, in a calm and loving voice. At other times, and to avoid being the weak parent with the child who is obnoxious in public places, or the overbearing parent who snaps and spanks a child in the aisle of a grocery store, you need to form a plan.

Define your discipline strategy, in writing, in a time of calm. Don't make it up in response to a problem, or you're likely to overreact. Even if you throw the paper away when done (do not do so), write it down anyway. Written words force you to make very clear decisions.
Include an escalation strategy, so that if the first disciplinary action fails, you have a back up plan.
Recognize when a discipline situation is necessary. At that exact moment be sure to apply your strategy, without giving it a second thought or consideration. Any strategy is most effective when applied confidently and consistently, so your child knows exactly when they are overstepping the bounds you set. If immediate disciplinary action is not possible at that particular moment, then wait until you get home. This must be understood by both you and the child as the highest priority to be effective.
Give a warning to the child the consequences of their actions. (For example, if you disobey me, your getting a time out.")
    # Understand that when the disciplinary action is completed, review why they got into trouble, but do so calmly so you do not scare your child. Ask them not to do that again, explain what will happen if the behavior is repeate. Give your child a hug and a kiss, and assure them you love them.
Learn that it is important that you each have trust and affection for each other. Children thrive better when they have certain rules to follow, because it gives them the feeling that they are cared for and loved.

If you have other children never compare them with their brothers or sisters ,that could lead them into low self esteem or make them feel like they have no worth.
Never tell kids things like "you make me sad" or cry infront of them if they did something very wrong that makes them feel sad and lowers their self esteem.
For young children, one minute of "time-out" per year of age is a good standard. Longer than that and they feel abandoned, and thus lose trust in you.
To encourage older children to change behavior, write the problem down, discuss it, and guide the child in developing his or her own correction plan. Make it measurable, and include a punishment for failure (e.g. grounding) and a reward for success (e.g. you will be trusted with this and not bothered about it again unless necessary). Do not make the punishment or reward based on money or possessions; this will lead to neurotic behavior in adulthood (e.g. buying things to feel better about yourself).
Everyone needs multiple chances to learn, and everyone needs a fresh start. Don't escalate for things repeated a week apart by a young child (i.e. pre-pubescent) -- just for those repeated in the same day. Young children don't have the same way of remembering things as older children and adults.

Stick to your defined strategy, no matter how mad you are at a given moment. When you are angry, it is biologically impossible to think clearly, and it can take up to an hour for your hormones to return to normal. That's why you should decide these things when you're calm.
No matter how intelligent your child is, remember that you are dealing with a child. Don't get into psychoanalysis; don't invite a child into an adult-level review of the problem. Tell the child the rules and consequences for breaking them, and apply it consistently. This will make the world seem to be a fair, safe, and predictable place.

Forget People Who Don't Want to Be Friends with You

Friendship can be a tenuous thing. One day, you're like family, and the next, the person won't even acknowledge you. Well, you don't deserve to be treated like that. Here's what to do.

Analyze what happened to lead to this. What did you do? If the answer is "I have no clue!" then that's okay too. However, if it is something you can sincerely apologize for, then do it. If it's not (because you didn't do anything), go to next step .
Get rid of them if they have no legitimate reason to ignore you. Let go of those good memories and send them into space. "Thinking about the good times you had" and about "What went wrong?" won't help you feel any better. It'll just make you hurt more, and you don't want that.
Know that there are good people out there. If you're currently in high school, then you don't have to worry about anything. If you don't have friends there, you will make them later on in life. For instance, college -- this is where people usually meet their true friends anyway.
Remember that everything happens for a reason. This person/these people/this team that you are no longer friends with aren't good for you, and there's a reason why you aren't their friend anymore. Good riddance!

* Be happy, because life's too short.
