Cancer common after liver transplantation

People
who undergo liver transplantation, particularly children, are at
increased risk for developing cancer, Finnish researchers report in the
journal Liver Transplantation.

"On the basis of our data," Dr. Fredrik Aberg, from the Helsinki University Central Hospital, and co-authors note, "1 of 6 liver transplant patients is estimated to develop some form of cancer by 20 years after transplantation."

Although post-transplant cancer are a recognized problem, "more studies are needed to obtain reliable data on cancer risk
patterns in an attempt to reach consensus on optimal monitoring of
(immune-suppressing drugs), cancer surveillance programs, and
strategies to minimize cancer risk," the authors maintain.

Their
study included all 540 patients who received liver transplants at
Aberg's center between 1982 and 2005, linked with the nationwide
Finnish Cancer Registry. During follow-up, 39 cancers developed in 36
patients, which translates into a 2.59-fold increased risk relative to
that seen in the general population.

Rates were higher among
children younger than 17 years of age than among older patients. The
cancers developed anywhere from 4 months to 14 years after the
transplant operation.

Further analysis showed that only
non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the body's infection-fighting
lymphatic system, and certain types of skin cancer were more common in liver transplant recipients than in the general population.

Risk factors for skin cancer were older age and the type of immune-suppressing drugs received, while those for non-Hodgkin lymphoma were male gender, young age, and the immediate post-transplant period.

Aberg's
team, "This study points out the importance of cancer surveillance
after liver transplantation as well as the need for innovative
immunosuppression strategies associated with less cancer risk."

Trick-or-Treating Safely

Halloween can be great fun for children and parents alike. But parents still need to enforce some rules to help ensure a safe night of trick-or-treating.

     Children under age 12 should always be accompanied by an adult.
     Develop a neighborhood route for children to follow. It should only include well-lit areas with which children are familiar.
     Make sure children understand they should never go into a stranger's home, and that they should only approach houses that are well-lit.
     Decide what time your child will return home, and tell them not to eat any candy before they get home.
     Make sure your child understands traffic safety rules.
     In case the child gets separated from a group, attach a piece of paper to your child's costume with his or her name, address and phone number.

Ways to help your child who suffer from ADHD

Since children with ADHD may be difficult to parent, you may need to adjust your home life a little to help your child. Here are some things you can do:

Make a schedule, setting specific times for waking up, eating, playing, doing homework, doing chores, watching TV or playing video games, and going to bed.

Write down simple house rules explaining what will happen when the rules are obeyed and when they are broken.

Make sure your directions are understood, asking your child to repeat the directions back to you.

Reward good behavior and congratulate your child when he or she completes each step of a task.

Make sure your child is supervised all the time.

Watch your child around his or her friends and reward good play behaviors.

Set a homework routine, picking a regular place for doing homework away from distractions. Divide homework time into small periods, giving frequent breaks.

Focus on effort, not grades, rewarding your child when he or she tries to finish school work. You can give extra rewards for earning better grades.

Talk with your child's teachers to find out how they’re doing in class, at playtime and during lunch. Ask for daily or weekly progress notes from the teacher.
Things that don't cause ADHD

    * Poor Parenting
    * Food additives or allergies
    * Refined Sugar
    * Ineffective schools
    * Bad teachers

Controlling ADHD

Does your child having problem conentrating?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), previously known as attention deficit disorder (ADD), is a common mental condition characterized by poor concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsiveness that are inappropriate for the child's age. It affects between 3 and 5% of American children and is usually diagnosed in childhood, although roughly 60% of the cases continue into the adult years.

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD can be broken down into 3 different subtypes: a predominantly inattentive subtype, a predominantly hyperactive-impulsive subtype and a combined subtype.

Symptoms of the inattentive subtype of ADHD include the following:

    * difficulty keeping the mind on any one thing

    * skipping over details

    * getting bored with a task before it’s completed

    * making careless mistakes

    * being easily distracted from a task, lesson, or conversation

    * difficulty listening when directly addressed

    * disorganization and forgetfulness

    * difficulty following instructions or finishing tasks

Children experiencing the hyperactive/impulsive

form of ADHD may:

    * have difficulty with quiet, sedentary activities

    * fidget or have trouble staying in their seat

    * talk excessively

    * blurt out answers before questions are completed

    * speak tactlessly or inappropriately

    * exhibit difficulty waiting

    * move around constantly, often running or climbing inappropriately

    * interrupt or intrude on others

The combined subtype applies when a child shows symptoms of both the inattentive and hyperactivity/impulsivity type of ADHD. Children diagnosed with ADHD will exhibit persistent symptom in a variety of settings, including at home, in school and during extracurricular activities.

Causes of ADHD

While the cause of ADHD remains unknown, studies show that the brains of children with ADHD may function differently than those of other children, suggesting an imbalance of chemicals that help regulate behavior. Research also indicates that genetics play a significant role in the development of ADHD, contributing to about three quarters of the total ADHD population. However, roughly 1/5 of all ADHD cases are thought to be acquired after conception due to brain injury caused by substance abuse or physical trauma prenatally or postnatally.

Will my child outgrow ADHD?

While ADHD is considered a chronic disorder, symptoms often get better as children grow older and learn to adjust. Hyperactivity usually stops in the late teenage years, but about half the children diagnosed with ADHD will continue to be easily distracted, have mood swings, hot tempers and are unable to complete tasks. However, parenting plays an important role in helping a child with ADHD. Children with loving, supportive parents who work together with school staff, mental health workers and their doctor have the best chance of becoming well-adjusted adults.

Treatments for ADHD

Although there is no cure for ADHD, a child’s symptoms can be controlled with a combination of behavioral management, counseling and medication.

Behavioral management can help you and your child identify unwanted behaviors and replace them with more positive ones.

Counseling may include psychotherapy, social skills training or parental training, and it can often help a child deal with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and stubborn behaviors.

Medication is most effective when it is combined with behavioral management or counseling. While there are many different types of ADHD medication, stimulants are the most common. By affecting the brain’s chemistry, it can help reduce overactivity and increase a child’s attention span.

If you think your child may have ADHA, talk to your doctor
to learn what you can do to help.

Give Your Kitchen a New Look

Develope a kitchen style of your very own such as the french country kitchen. Be inspired by other creations, but your final decision should be yours and follow your heart.

    Start off by analyzing your home in comparison to your kitchen. Make sure whatever style you choose its blends in with the rest of the house. If the french country kitchen is something you always loved go with that. Don't be afraid to try something different.
    If there is money in the budget hire a decorator for 1 to 2 hours, it can get you off to a great start.
    Invest in a good kitchen book and a few kitchen magazines.
    Fill a folder with pictures and notes obtained from your books, magazines and decorator.
   5. Choose a style such as contemporary, traditional, country, cottage or a combination that fits which the rest of the home.
    If country is your style, you can add a center island with a drop leaf table and add a mantle above the cabinets to display English china.
  Have an older contemporary kitchen and want to update it. Add a fresh coat of paint and change your appliances to the sleek look of steel.
    For a complete new look, traditional kitchens have a style that basically goes with everything in your home. The cabinets can pass for a contemporary look or a country look.
    If you decide for example to go with the French country kitchen. You can add a shabby vintage look to this style, visit your local thrift shops for old china, old pictures even an old butcher block table can add charm to your kitchen.

     You can mix styles, for instance combining french country colors with a traditional style.
     Fill you folder with your favorite colors and pictures.
     Lay them out and start visualizing.
     Try changing your backsplash to a recycled glass mosaic tile- the newest trend!

     Don't let a decorator take over; you should make the final decision.
     Make sure that before you proceed in redoing your kitchen style, you talk things out with your partner in a positive way. This should be a joint effort.
     Taking over a project when there is a second party involved will cause arguments and hard feelings.

Convert Your Living Room Into a Beach

If you love the sights and sounds of the beach, try bringing them into your home. You can't put an entire beach into your house, but you can certainly bring the suggestion of it into your home.

    Choose the right room. If possible, you'll want to choose a place that already has some connection to the outdoors, such as a large patio door. A sun room or enclosed porch would be another great spot for your indoor beach.
    Decide how far you want to go. Do you want a traditional living room with beach decorations and colors or do you want the whole thing to evoke a beach?
          * Keep your budget in mind. Bringing in a few patio chairs you already own and setting up a tabletop fountain is a far different matter than knocking down part of an exterior wall to install a sun room!
          *
            Bring in some beach-inspired colors.
            Bring in some beach-inspired colors.
            Think about what colors the beach means to you. Is a beach about the muted, natural tones of sand and surf, or would you like some bright, tropical colors in the mix, too?
    Look at real beaches, photos of beaches, and photos of beach and seashore rooms and homes for ideas. What elements would you like to try to recreate?
    Let the light in, especially natural light. Do all you can with skylights and windows. Light and spaciousness is a big part of why many people like beaches.
          * Light the room gently at night. Candles or other low mood lighting will fit well in this theme. Of course, if you use the room for reading or other activities at night, light those areas accordingly.
    Take advantage of outdoor furnishings. You'll find all sorts of furniture for outdoor, poolside, and beach use, so there is no need to go with the molded plastic sort. It may still be less costly and more durable than conventional living room furniture. Instead, go for comfortable, casual pieces that fit your theme.
          * Don't forget that this is still a living room. Plan for your seats to have cushions of some sort, even if they are not weatherproof to stand up to the elements.
          * This would be a great place for a couple of wooden deck chairs or Adirondack chairs, since the wood need not stand up to moisture and weather.

      Plants will help anyone get into the spririt.
      Plants will help anyone get into the spririt.
      Choose the right plants. Many tropical and tropical-looking plants thrive indoors and in indirect light. Try a dieffenbachia or other large plant as an anchor and build out from there.

      Use natural materials. Try a bamboo lattice or mat, coarsely woven textiles in an island pattern, and an interesting piece of driftwood as a natural sculpture.

      Include an element of water. Water brings with it sound, texture, and moisture. The exact nature is up to you and your space, but consider an aquarium, a fountain, a water feature, or even a small indoor pond.
    Plant the space outside the room. Make the view through the windows or patio door as tropical and beach-like as your climate allows. Also choose colors and styles for the hard surfaces outdoors. For instance, cover a patio or wall with tile in warm colors or a tropical motif. You may also prefer to put your pond, water feature, or sandbox outdoors.

      A Zen garden.
      A Zen garden.
      Consider carefully whether to introduce sand. Unless you have a truly separate room with a concrete floor, real sand is probably not a good idea in your house. It will only get tracked around and abrade your other floors. If you like, you can have suggestions of sand, instead. You can buy a tabletop Zen garden or make your own in any size you please. You could obtain or make a sand pendulum, a tray of sand with a long, heavy pendulum hanging just into the surface so that it draws patterns as it swings. You could have a jar or terrarium with colored sand and perhaps seashells in it.

      Salt air, sand, and sunlight fade and age things.
      Salt air, sand, and sunlight fade and age things.
      Use an aged, weathered appearance. A worn-out pail could contain some of those plants. Weathered wood would go just fine. This would be a great place to try distressing paint or fabric, if you can't find something that's already suitably worn.
   Consider your fireplace part of the decor. Often, living rooms already have fireplaces. They provide warmth and low light on cool nights that is well suited to a beach theme.
   Bring the room together. Are you trying for an open, airy feel or a cozy beach hut? How will traffic move through the room? Whatever you do to make the room more beach-like, do it consistently, or at least coherently, throughout the room.

      If you're going to use seashells as part of the decor, use real ones. One or two large, genuine seashells (perhaps cleaned and varnished) will look a lot better than a bunch of plaster (or plastic) seashell-themed things.
     Lots of paintings and other decorations feature beach, nautical and harbor scenes. Use them to suggest the waterfront, too.
     If you're new to keeping fish or aquariums, start with freshwater varieties. They may not be quite as colorful as their saltwater cousins, but they are far easier to care for.
     Don't forget how you really live in the room. Do you watch TV or read there? Does the family spread out toys or projects? Is this room off to the side or a major thoroughfare?
     Let in the air. If it's nice out, open up the doors and windows and let the air in.
     There are lots of tacky beach-theme things. The best approach is to go with natural materials and handcrafts whenever possible.

      There are beaches all over the world.
      There are beaches all over the world.
      Beaches come in all different styles and nationalities. A beach means something different depending on whether it's in Hawaii, in California, or in Maine. For an additional level of theming and unity, include a geographic and cultural element. Greece, Italy, and Spain all have beaches, and they all have strong stylistic motifs that could add color, flair, and unity to a room. Or, try for a South Pacific, Asian, or Australian, or African theme, according to your tastes.
     When the living room is occupied for a relaxing time, for example a nap, consider putting on some beach sounds. There are CDs available that have sounds of the waves, birds, and people.

     Children or pets who chew on dieffenbachia could die. If this is a concern, choose a different plant.
     Make sure that the structure of your home can withstand the weight of any water you bring in. A small aquarium or tabletop fountain is probably not a concern, but larger aquariums and indoor ponds and water features could be. You may need to reinforce or scale back your plans.
